Trusted behind the chair.
Why curl and textured hair specialists keep reaching for one simple jar.
Last updated October 2026
Quick answer
Curl Jar has become a go-to for curl and textured hair specialists behind the chair. Not because it was built for professionals, but because a simple, reliable formula makes a stylist's job easier on hair they haven't worked on before. That professional trust is one of the clearest signs a curl product actually works.
Most curl brands are built to sell direct to the person washing their own hair at home. Curl Jar was too. So when specialists, the people who work on dozens of different curl patterns a week, on hair that isn't their own, under time pressure, start reaching for it unprompted, that's worth talking about.
Behind the chair
Why professionals are harder to win over than consumers
A stylist doesn't get the luxury of "it worked eventually." They need a product to behave predictably, on hair they've often just met, in the middle of a service, with a client watching in the mirror. There's no time to explain a whole regimen mid-appointment.
Doesn't survive the chair
✕A long adjustment period
✕Only works with a very specific routine
✕Needs three other products layered on top
What wins stylists over
✓One clear job: define, hold, hydrate
✓Works on its own, without a full regimen
✓Consistent across curl types and porosities
The difference
What "salon favourite" actually means for Curl Jar
The Curl Activator was never positioned as a professional-only formula. It's the same jar a customer buys for their own bathroom shelf. That's what makes its pickup among specialists meaningful.
The usual route
Salon → Shelf
Engineered for a stylist's toolkit, then marketed down to consumers.
The Curl Jar route
Shelf → Salon
Stylists picked it up because it worked the same for them as for everyone else.
For a stylist, that means one less variable to manage mid-service.

Source: British Beauty Council
The British Beauty Council describes this as big business that's still growing, with demand for specialist Afro salons rising faster than supply. The shortfall led the Council to set up a Hair Equity Taskforce with the Hair & Beauty Industry Authority, and that work led to updated National Occupational Standards in 2020 requiring textured hair training. The Council has since kept pressing the government, pointing out that publicly funded hairdressing courses still haven't fully implemented that training.
Against that backdrop, a specialist choosing one product for textured hair, consistently, is a meaningful vote of confidence.
What it means
What this signals about textured hair care
Textured and curly hair has historically been underserved by both salons and product development. Training, formulas and even basic access to specialists lagged behind straight-hair care for years. A simple, consistent product being picked up by the people working on curls every day is a small but real signal that the category is maturing: less guesswork, and more products that just do what they say.

Frequently asked questions
Do hair salons actually use Curl Jar products?
Yes. Specialists including The Curl Clinic (Leeds), Thriv Salon (Cardiff), Cyrl Cymru (Aberystwyth), bridal stylist Charlotte Butler (Hertfordshire), PS Gemini (Tokyo) and Lunatic Fringe (Dubai) use Curl Jar's Curl Activator with clients.
Is Curl Jar a professional-only brand?
No. The Curl Activator is the same product sold to home customers. It hasn't been reformulated or repackaged for salon use, so specialists use the exact jar available in Curl Jar's own range.
What percentage of UK salons specialise in textured or Afro hair?
According to industry data cited by the British Beauty Council, of roughly 35,700 UK beauty salons, only around 300 were dedicated Afro-Caribbean or textured hair salons. That's under 1%, against an estimated 10 million women in the UK and Europe with Afro or multi-textured hair.
